All of the Free-DC stats are run from my home using my own electricity and ISP. Costs per month are around $130 or so. All of the hardware is built using donations.
This will offset my costs and let me do some more upgrades.
I’ve recently received some hardware and have some more coming in the next few weeks. Some of the large server type machines I’ve got are proving a little loud to run at home though, still working on that. What I need in the coming months are the following :
A replacement firewall. This is currently an older P2-800 running smoothwall. As my bandwidth is going up to 300Mbps down and 30Mbps up in the next few months (TWC MAXX) this will need replacing to keep up. Cost ~ $300-400.
900-1000W PSU for a dual xeon coming soon ~ $200
Full size case for dual xeon (EATX) ~ $200
GPU for dual xeon (only if needed) ~ $50
Update – May 8th 2015
Though I’ve not received it as the campaign is still running. I wanted to give an update on what I have purchased so far.
I received a dual xeon from a long time Free-DC supporter. Included was a SuperMicro X8DTN+ board and two 3.3Ghz quadcore xeon chips with the stock heatsinks. 72Gb Ram installed in 18x4Gb modules (+ some spares). 5x160Gb Intel SSD’s and a SAS RAID controller with cabling for SATA.
HAF X case – $190 (though suprisingly the mobo doesn’t actually mount quite right but good enough)
EVGA SuperNova 1050W PSU – $174.
Not having too much luck keeping this running though. The cpu fans never get more than 900rpm so the machine overheats and switches off. It’s a very old BIOS, so likely does not recognize the chips. So I tried to update it but it’s actually write protected. My donor is looking into this.
I will still need two more drives for the OS and some local backups. Plan is perhaps 2x2Tb in a RAID 1 config.
I will take some pics of the machine soon.
Seperately I purchased an Arris SB6183 cable modem capable of 16 channels down. – $130. This is installed already. We just this week had the analog->digital switchover start in the Raleigh area, which frees up bandwidth. I’m hearing it will be late June/early July when we start to see our bandwidth upped to 300Mbps down and 20Mbps up but we’ll just have to wait for that.
I also bid on and won a new Firewall. I’ve tried something different this time. It’s a Watchguard Firebox X750e. Got it for $57 (+$14 shipping). Should arrive today.
So total in hardware is $565 to date.
